<image:title>Diabetic Footcare - Diabetes can affect your feet by reducing the blood flow to the extremities and causing a lack of sensation (neuropathy) often initially in the toes. This is sometimes accompanied by a burning feeling (often at night) which is called painful peripheral neuropathy If you experience these symptoms it is advisable to consult your Diabetic Clinic or Podiatrist, since it is possible in many cases to alleviate the symptoms Our diabetic assessment consist of checking your ability to sense pressure, temperature and vibration as well as your circulation using a dopler. You can reduce the risk of complications by checking your feet, hosiery and shoes daily. If there are signs of redness in any part of the foot or leg, or if the foot feels warmer than usual, this might indicate infection of inflammation, which needs prompt professional attention. Awareness of pain and injury may be diminished, so inspect the inside of your shoes daily for objects like nails or torn linings, which might cut the skin. With your consent we will pass on your result to your GP.</image:title>

<image:title>Corns & Calluses - Plantar callosities are an area of hardened skin caused by an over-activity of the normal response of the skin where excessive shear and intermittent compressive stresses have been applied. These stresses can be a result of inappropriate footwear, bony prominence’s and lifestyle factors such as occupation or sports and hobbies. However some people have a natural tendency to form callus because of their skin type. Corns are similar in their make up to a callus but much deeper into the layers of skin, making it much more painful – it may feel like you are walking on tiny stones. Corns normally appear over bony prominence’s and the ball of the foot, but many people also experience corns on the tops of the toes if the toes are deformed in any way. Elderly people have less fatty tissue in their skin and this can lead to callus forming on the ball of the foot, which if painful can lead to a risk of falling. It is important to address the cause of the callus and corns to prevent re-occurrence, interventions may include orthotic devices, footwear education or felt padding to the ball of the foot which will benefit to compensate for any loss of natural padding. Emollient creams delay callus building up, and help improve the skin’s natural elasticity. We will be able to advise you on the most appropriate skin preparations for your needs.</image:title>

<image:title>Initial Assessment - Your initial appointment with us gives us the opportunity to get to know your feet and a little about your health and lifestyle choices. Please arrive a little early for your first appointment as there are a few questions we need to ask you such as your address and medical details. At this appointment a general podiatry assessment for general skin, circulation and neuropathy conditions will be carried out. A treatment plan will then be suggested and treatment carried out to address your issues. A specialist assessment for more complex needs and to assess your lower limb alignment and function of your feet may be advised and carried out at a future appointment. All information you give at this time will be treated with the strictest confidence. Please see our data protection policy here for more information.</image:title>

<image:title>Fungal/Thickened nail plates - Fungal Nail Infections are caused by microscopic organisms called dermophytes. . The condition mostly affects the toenails and is more common in men than in women. . The first signs of a fungal infection are usually a change in colour of the nail, usually white but as it progresses it can turn black, yellow or green with thickening of the nail plate. . Factors that can increase the risk of fungal infections are: Shoes that cause the feet to become hot and sweaty Consistent damage to the nail Poor health such as diabetes and psoriasis. Treatment by your Podiatrist can take many months (12+) and may include reduction of the nail plate using a drill which will improve the appearance by removing the superficial fungus or drilling a series of micro holes to allow the absorption of topical agent . Oral or topical anti-fungal agents may also be advised. Oral anti-fungal agents are only prescribed by your GP if you are a suitable candidate and may cause side effects. Topical treatments are available over the counter or from your Podiatrist who will also provide you with the correct information for good foot hygiene and prevention of the fungus returning.</image:title>

<image:title>Verruca - Verrucae are benign types of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) group of which there are over 200 sub types. On the hands and feet the most common sub types are HPV-1, HPV-2 & HPV-4. The virus enters the skin through small lesions and is contagious. It is only able to survive in the epidermal layers of the skin and doesn’t infect the subcutaneous tissue below. The virus may lay dormant for many weeks and in some cases months, it then has an increase in its production of skin cells and takes on a warty appearance. If the verruca does not spread and is pain free we suggest leaving it alone especially in children where their natural immune system will allow it to spontaneously regress. If you have or have had a verrucae you will know it can be one of the most frustrating and persistent conditions to have. There are several treatment modalities on the open market and often by the time a patient visits a Podiatrist, they will have tried some of these, with varying success. Somerset Podiatry Clinic is pleased to be able to offer this effective “needling” for verrucae, which is 65% effective in treating the verrucae with a single application. The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic and is pain free, it involves puncturing the verrucae with a small sterile needle multiple times, which researchers believe it to work by pushing the infected cells further into the subcutaneous tissue below the epidermis, creating a controlled inflammatory response causing the immune system to destroy the infected cells. Only one verruca needs to be treated as needling can cause spontaneous regression in all lesions following a needling session. This procedure is only carried out after an initial consultation with our Podiatrist to assess patient suitability.</image:title>

<image:title>Heel Pain</image:title>
<image:caption>Achilles Tendonitis is an inflammation of the tendon at the back of the heel. Most common causes are often found to be over use of the tendon in a specific activity, or due to the intensity of a high impact sport. Incorrect of poorly fitting footwear can also be a factor. It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.</image:caption>

<image:title>Chilblains - Chilblains are the body’s reaction to changes in extreme temperature. These reactions include burning, itchy swellings resulting in a change of skin colour. In extreme cases the skin many become blistered. They mainly affect the extremities but can also affect areas exposed to pressure such as a bunion or toe deformity. They are more common in women than men and can occur at any age but are more common in children and the elderly due possible circulation inefficiencies. Keeping the feet warm and moisturised will enable the chilblains to repair themselves, however in reoccurring chilblains or where you suspect your skin has become infected your GP or Podiatrist can prescribe further treatments.</image:title>
